I have found that the most important thing in a human’s life is the earth, because without it we would never have lived. It is not a coincidence that we seek to bring global attention to the importance that the environment, the earth, our Mother Earth, has on life in this world.  In many cultures, the concept of Mother Earth as the basis of their existence is integrated in their spiritual and cultural beliefs, and reflects the interdependence that exists between all living beings, humans, animals or plants. In order to make Earth happy we need to focus our attention on the ancestral wisdom that recognizes the holistic importance of the environment for life on this planet. No one can live without it, and those who abuse it, who make excessive use of its resources, are harming not only the survival of future generations, but the existence of the present one.

The Real Beauty of Mother Earth!

So-called modern civilizations seem to view the earth the same way they saw it before Columbus proved that the planet is round.  They seem to view it as a vast, limitless flat plain, where you only need to walk into the horizon to find more resources.  Consumption is encouraged, for the good of the enterprises which transform those resources into the goods and services we think are indispensable. We never take a moment to think that the bounty we all are using, and our future generations will try to use, is not being tended to, is not being guarded, is not being integrated into the most intimate fibers of our being.  We are conscious of protecting our children, our patrimony, our skills, but somehow we have not integrated Mother Earth into that protective scheme.

Our Magnificent World

Can you imagine our world facing increased threats of apocalyptic hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, floods, diseases and extinction caused by global warming? Some people say that scientists are overreacting and that the situation is not as bad as it seems. Well, think twice. The world is facing gargantuan problems for 2 reasons. First, existing climate models predict that global temperatures will increase by 1.4°C to 5.8°C from 1990 to 2100. The increase in forest fires in Australia, Asia and recently in Southern California that forced more than half a million people from their homes are certainly supporting evidence of global warming. Secondly, the melting of the ice caps caused by global warming is predicted to rise global average sea levels by 9 cm to 88 cm between the years 1990 and 2100. This is evidenced by flash floods all over the world, leading to loss of lives and extinction of some animals and plants. Further, floods and droughts would lead to loss in food production leading to hunger in many parts of the world. In conclusion, global warming is a very serious and urgent issue confronting us. Everyone, let’s roll up our sleeves to combat global warming by going green and conserving energy today! Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!

Trees are the largest and longest living organisms on earth. To grow tall the tree has become a miracle of engineering and a complex chemical factory. It is able to take water and salts out of the earth and lift them up to the leaves, sometimes over 400 ft above. By means of photosynthesis the leaves combine the water and salts with carbon dioxide from the air to produce the nutrients which feed the tree. In this process, as well as wood, trees create many chemicals, seeds and fruit of great utility to man. Trees also remove carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, from the air.

Trees are of continued importance to the environment. Tropical rain forests have of particular significance; although they now occupy less than 6 per cent of the land surface of the earth they probable sustain more than half of the biological species on the planet.

Notwithstanding the debt we owe to trees, their emotive power, and their importance to other forms of life, the forested area of the earth is steadily being depleted. This is leading to the degradation of the environment and the extinction of many species. There is now a real danger that in the not very distant future man will destroy a large proportion of the present population of species on earth, create an uninhabitable environment, and then die out. If this happens it will not be the first time that a large proportion of the species on the earth have been extinguished.

Trees makes our environment beautiful.

Role of Trees

1.)    A small seed becomes a big Tree, gives shed in summer and in winter all of the leaves of the Tree falls down;

2.)    Provides us more sunlight and the atmosphere becomes more warm.

3.)    Flower on threes give joyfulness to us. Fruits satisfy our hunger.

4.)    Trees always take away polluted air (Carbon Dioxide) from the environment and in return they give fresh, purified oxygen

5.)    Tree provide home to the Birds, Animals and Human Beings also.

6.)    Some tree have medicinal values also, their every part starting from the roots to the top are full of medicinal values, Neem (Botanical Name: Azadirachta Indica) is a very famous tree and best example of this.

7.)    Trees help in controlling temperature of the environment. You have noticed that the place where there are trees, are much cooler and hygienic for living.

Apart from the above, trees are effectively the lungs of the environment. They take much of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen via photosynthesis. Therefore, the greenhouse gas load is reduced and effects of global warming are also brought down. Further dead trees that get buried in soil eventually provide fossil fuels like coal, gasoline products, etc. Among all, trees have an indisputable role in bringing rain to earth. Moreover, they provide a cover over the top surface of earth preventing excessive heating up by solar rays.

On the other hand, trees are now cut down. Deforestation is normal now a day and because of this, it creates a lot of problem not only in our community but also in our economy. Some of the hazards from deforestation are as follow:

1.)     Soil Erosion: The trees help in keeping the soil intact with their roots but when there is lot of cutting of trees, the soil is washed away with water during the rains. And during floods it creates havoc. Due to soil erosion the water level also falls down.

2.)     Pollution: Trees help in controlling the pollution in the air and if there are no trees, we have to face more air pollution.

3.)     Lack of Pure Oxygen

4.)    Environmental Imbalance

5.)    Imbalance in the Food Chain of the Ecosystem.

6.)    Global Warming is becoming a major problem these days due to this. Due to this Glaciers are melting and the Sea Level is rising day by day. This is indirectly creating lot of ecological problems.

Proper Waste Disposal

As the number of people increases in a certain place, the state of being industrialized is also increasing. So, it tells us that waste management is becoming a serious problem not only in the Philippines but also all over the world. Proper way of waste disposal is the most crucial issue to the public, especially to the health of the people and the effect of it in the environment. In order to prevent this kind of problem in our society, we must learn the proper disposal of our garbage. It helps us to have a cleaner environment and lessen the chances of spreading diseases due to the improper waste disposal and it also lessen the possibility of contamination in not only in air, land, but as well as in ground water.

If you are aiming to have a cleaner environment, we can use the different alternative as follows:

It is the process of separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable garbage.

Saw dust

Peel of the fruits/vegetables

Candy wrappers

Empty bottles / cans

Plastic cups

It is the process where biodegradable waste is place in certain tank or a hole (Leaves Saw dust, Peel of the fruits/vegetables). It will be place there for a certain time to let it decompose by the help of the decomposers. After the decomposition, the decompose waste can now be used as a fertilizer for plants.

It is the most useful and helpful way in the management of waste. For non-biodegradable waste, we can recycle it by creating helpful and useful things out of it such as plastic bottles can be made as decorations in the houses. Used magazines can be made into beautiful pillows. It can also be the source of income in the community. This can really reduced pollution, save our natural resources and conserve energy in the households.

Some ways in reducing waste:

a.)    Choose durable items instead of disposal items.

b.)    Buy rechargeable batteries so that you can use it all over again.

c.)     Used and reuse cloths napkin instead of using paper napkins.

d.)    Use reusable shopping bags instead of plastics bags.

Trash Cans with proper lables.

Learning Insights

Saving our environment is what people must do not only today but for tomorrow. In this activity featured by Smartschools gimmick, students like us are more aware of what happening in the environment now days and we are more encourage helping save our Mother earth. Not only the students of General Santos City High School participated this activity but also the students in different schools in the Philippines. In this, students have the willingness in supporting the government in implementing different law that can lessen the degradation of our environment. Ika nga, “Ang mga kabataan ans simula sa pagligtas ng ating kalikasan.”

We learned a lot of things from what we’ve done. Trees are really important for the balance in our ecosystem. It has a lot of uses. The correct (proper) disposal of our garbage, it really helps us maintain our surrounding clean and to prevent the existence of diseases. So, PLANT TREES AND SAVE LIFE!  AND DISPOSE YOUR GARBAGE PROPERLY TO HAVE A GREENER AND CLEANER ENVIRONMENT.

The student of General Santos City High School with the cooperation of the Youth for Environment and Schools Organization (YES-O) and the Supreme Students Government heard the call of our mother Earth. We did an action in helping lessen the degrading issue of our environment brought by human. They conduct activities which promotes global care for the environment such as clean-up drive, and tree planting. They also helps in the development of the MRF of the school.

” Ang mga masisipag at active na mag-aaral ng Mataas na Paaralang Heneral Santos. Sila ay nagtatanim kahit sa paso lamang upang makatulong sa pagpaparami ng mga halaman sa paaralan.”

Even though we can really feel the hotness of the sun burning our skins, we did not stop and we will never stop doing actions in just simple ways only to help lessen the degredation factor of our environment and to save our mother natur

SANAY MaMUlat tayo sA katutuhanan!!!!

Dahil ito ang ating KAILANGan!!!
